Online trading has fired up the process of achieving gender equality. It has given a chance to women who fail to fit in the traditional trader stereotype by encouraging women to take the stage and become keen participants.
Gone are the days when trading was an exclusive career for serious traders in suit. Women traders are becoming more and more prevalent since the last decade.
In conjunction with the International Women’s Day, we have listed out 3 women who are at the top of their game in the trading and investments world:
Abigail Johnson
She is the daughter of the chairman of Fidelity investment, Edward C. Johnson III. After graduating with an MBA from Harvard Business School, Johnson has worked her way up the chain by starting out in customer service to analyst position, equity portfolio manager and finally becoming an executive. She became the President and CEO of the company in October 2014. Johnson is also a member of the board of directors of the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA), the first and only woman to serve on the board of the Financial Services Forum.
Jennifer Fan
Fan graduated from business school with a degree in finance, statistics, and operational research at the young age of 19 and went on to join Arrowhawk Capital Management in the summer of 2009. She became a partner and portfolio manager after only 2 years in Arrowhawk. She then left Arrowhawk in January 2012 to start her own company, Arbalet Capital LLC with $650 million. However, due to the sluggish performance of the market, she then worked at Millennium Management and decided to start off her own family office in 2019. Fan is a hedge fund manager who specializes in finding relative value in energy and agriculture markets.
Kathy Lien
Upon graduating from New York University’s Stern School of Business, Lien began her career on Wall Street at the age of 18. Her first job is in JPMorgan Chase, making markets on the interbank foreign exchange (FX) trading desk. She then joined JPMorgan’s cross-markets proprietary trading group. In 2003, Lien started the leading online foreign-exchange research portal, DailyFX and joined Global Futures & Forex Ltd as director of currency research in 2008. She is now currently serving as managing director of FX strategy at BK Asset Management in New York City.
These top women in the financial field have proven that gender is not a problem when it comes to trading. With ample knowledge and hard work, women definitely have the potential to outperform their male counterparts in the long run.
Even though there is still a long way to go before the gender gap is closed in the financial market, women are constantly and will undoubtedly reshape the trading industry.
